Nagpur to be developed as solar city |

The ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing ‘Development of Solar Cities’ aimed at reducing at least 10 per cent of the projected demand of conventional energy through renewable energy installations -
In an attempt to promote renewable energy usage across the country, the Government has sanctioned as plan to develop 15cities, including Agra, Nagpur and Chandigarh as ‘Solar Cities’. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing ‘Development of Solar Cities’ aimed at reducing at least 10 per cent of the projected demand of conventional energy through renewable energy installations.
During the XIth Plan (2007-12), MNRE has proposed to develop 60 cities as ‘Solar Cites’. “15 cities --- Agra, Nagpur and Chandigarh, have been sanctioned for development (as ‘solar cites’),” MNRE Deepak Gupta told reporters here. The state corporations will appoint consultants for the renewable energy in the city and the best way to harness it.
Minster of New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah had earlier said that the Centre would provide financial support up to Rs. 50 lakh for each city to the respective sate Governments for preparation of master plan, awareness generation and capacity building activities.
